Definitely run a carfax. If the car does have a less than perfect title (stolen, wrecked, etc.), the seller should not expect you to pay retail value on the car. Do the same checks you'd do while buying any used car, but keep special attention to proper VIN numbers in all locations, the condition of the frame (most important, in my opinion), rust spots, paint over-spray (inside door jams, engine bay), and anything that an auto-rebuilder might have been lackadaisical with.
